Giving Yoga a try

With the dawn of 2012, I made it my New Year’s Resolution to try yoga. This was due to several reasons: I constantly felt tight in my muscles, I was constantly stressed from my job and home life, and my doctor said that my blood pressure was too high and slowly increasing. A friend of mine told me that Hatha Yoga would solve, or at least alleviate, most of these problems. So, I decided to try it at CANDO one day to see if it did help.

TRX Training

My general feeling about weight training is that everyone should learn

> the basic barbell exercises. There is simply no substitute for the

> practicality of adding weight to a bar on exercises that train your

> body's natural movement patterns.

>

> Once proper technique has been learned and a good base of strength has

> been established, incorporating other methods of exercise is a great

> idea.

>

> One such method of exercise is TRX Straps.

Spinning In Short Hills

I’ve always been a runner. I would say the best time of my life was in high school and college, when I was on the track team. So, understand how devastated I was when I sprained my ankle running in the reservation. My doctor told me I couldn’t run for 6 weeks. After about a week or so of feeling sorry for myself, my friend suggested I try spinning at the club. I honestly had no idea what it was other than that it was a bunch of people on exercise bikes in a small room, but it beat sitting around all day. I decided to take the 8:30 on Tuesday.

Corporate Lunch Workout

I’m a member of the Princeton club and I work about five minutes away from it. But it never crossed my mind to go there during my 12:00 lunch break, probably because it sounded insane. Why would I want to wear myself out and then have to go back to work for another 4 hours? That was my mode of thinking until one day, my office buddy bullied me into taking the one hour spinning/CXWORX session. It was a slow day so figured I could risk falling asleep at my desk when the exhaustion hit later.

Losing Weight in 2012

With the beginning of the new year, I made the same resolution I made for the past five years: To lose weight. At this point, it seemed like a vain effort to even try. Every attempt followed the same pattern. I would start out motivated and go to the gym but I would never see results and eventually I would slip back to what I was doing before. This year was different though. My friend recommended me to Peter Caggiano, a trainer at Cando that helped him lose 60 pounds. This peaked my interest and I decided to look into it.

Athletic Training

Ever since sophomore year of high school, I was positive that I wanted to play soccer in college. I considered myself a good player, but I felt that something was missing. No matter how much time I put into practicing my skills, I never saw a significant improvement. Eventually, I realized many of my problems as a soccer goalkeeper came from the fact that I was 6’2’’ and only 160 pounds. I was weak trying to grab the ball in the air because I would constantly get knocked around, my balance was poor, and I couldn’t dive far enough to cover significant parts of the upper goal.

CXWORX

I’m back. And with my return comes the second installment of my crazy day. This time I had the new CXWORX, so I was flying blind into this class while being utterly exhausted from the workout I just took prior. But thanks to some miracle, two good things occurred. The first was that since Bonnie was teaching this class, I could stay where I was and take a five minute power nap. The second thing was that the class was very ab intensive, so it was only 30 minutes long.

Sports Conditioning

I was feeling particularly adventurous today so I decided to do both Sports Conditioning and the new CXWORX today, BACK TO BACK. Suicide I know, but like I said, I rolled out of bed today and was like, “Yarrr, your going down world.” Better yet, Bonnie was going to be leading both of them. She has to be my favorite instructor at Cando. Her enthusiasm is contagious and I like how she always picks on me during her sessions. Anyway, my crazy workout awaited me. I’ll talk about Sports Conditioning on this post and then CXWORX on another.

Les Mills Super Launch

As you can read from my other blogs, particularly Body Pump and CXWORX, I am a big fan of the Les Mills classes. So I was really excited at the fact that they’re having a launch event for various Les Mills progams this Saturday, January 14. Its gonna be set up like a “workout buffet”: you’ll get a 30 minute sampler of each class. Obviously, I’ve done some of the classes, but there are others I’ve never heard of before, such as Body Attack and Body Combat (sounds intense). I hope there are a few of you out there who are as enthused about this event as I am.
